The Pokemon Red & Blue Knowledge Center part of the Retro Game Corner focuses on the first 151 Pokemon that Game Freak created for its billion-dollar franchise.

GI will take a look at the each Pokemon and offer suggestions about movesets, what teams to put together and usefulness. If a particular Pokemon has made it onto our all-star, Final Four conquering team, we’ll show you that, too. Look for the Editor’s Choice sticker on our selections for best bets. Please remember: This section only highlights the Red & Blue era of moves.

Special thanks to Bulbapedia for the official
Pokemon Red and Blue artwork.

Pidgey is the introduction to flying Pokemon. Its basic moveset is just that: basic. And it’s really nothing to get excited about. The purpose of having a Pidgey is to raise it to become Pidgeot and turn it into a powerhouse with TMs and HMs. As with most Pokemon, keep it unevolved until it learns enough of the moves it needs and then let it grow.

No. 016 — pIDGEY

No. 017 — pIDGEOTTO

No. 018 — pIDGEOT

The middle part of the Pidgey evolution chain isn’t bad, but it isn’t special, either. It’s far easier to find a Pidgey and evolve it to Pidgeotto than it is to catch one so keep that in mind when choosing a bird Pokemon for your team.

It has the same moveset as Pidgey and the later evolution of Pidgeot, so let it learn as many moves as possible before evolving it.

The final part of the evolution chain is the keeper. Pidgeot is a strong addition to any team (that doesn’t include legendary bird Zapdos) and is a prime choice for teaching HM 02 (Fly). Fly is an important move needed at the end of the game and in battles with the Final Four.
